 Kingaroy

Kingaroy Shire is the regional capital of the South Burnett region of Queensland and is located north-west of Brisbane and north of Toowoomba.
We share borders with the Shires of Nanango, Wondai, Wambo and Chinchilla and cover an area of 2,422 sq. km

At 30 June 2004 Kingaroy Shire's estimated population was 12,302 and by 2026 this is forecast to expand to 15,400 - a 25% increase.

Kingaroy Information

Art and Heritage Precinct.

128 Haly Street Kingaroy-
(07) 4162 6272
First point of call, the Kingaroy Information Art and Heritage Precinct, offers a unique snap shot of the Kingaroy region at a glance.  Peanut tastings, Interactive displays and local art/craft. The Information Centre provides local knowledge about the veiled treasures of the Kingaroy region and the South Burnett such as:
"The Bunya Mountains - a majestic offshoot of the Great Dividing Range with a wealth of flora and fauna."
"The panoramic view from Mount Wooroolin of the patchwork fields, iconic Peanut silos and carefully tendered vineyards."
"Tours throughout the region - Historic Taabinga Homestead, wineries, farming (hands on experiences), Bethany (home to the Bjelke-Petersen Family."
"Take the opportunity to stay at one of the many hosted accommodation villas and country cottages sprinkled throughout the region."
This innovative new centre was opened in September 2005. It is a contemporary building linking the newly relocated Art Gallery and the Museum - showcasing the Kingaroy Shire. The Centre is staffed by volunteers, who are only too happy to impart their local knowledge as well as plan your visit to local attractions.

Kingaroy Heritage Museum.

Formerly, the Kingaroy Power House (1925-1952), the museum depicts the history of Kingaroy Shire under the themes of People, Power and Peanuts. The early development of town and shire is illustrated by informative displays and a large collection of photos. The Peanut Exhibition area contains machinery and photos of the early development of the peanut industry, including prototypes, invented by local farmers. The museum also has facilities available for study and research, attached to its archive area.

Kingaroy Shire Art Gallery/1938 Council Chambers.
The Art Gallery showcases local professional and emerging artists as well as hosting travelling exhibitions. The 1938 Council Chambers with polished floors, and intricate ceilings is an artwork in itself and a 'must see'.

Interpretive Arena - Kingaroy & South Burnett.
An open park landscaped area behind the Precinct, planted with local crops and vegetation, combines walkways and interpretive signage.
There is an inviting covered area with chairs and tables available for coach groups to gather to partake of self-catered refreshments.

South Burnett Woodcrafters Workshop.
The local woodworkers are happy to be available to meet bus groups and show their skills. Handcrafted articles are for sale in the Precinct.

Bunya Mountains National Park.

One of the true natural highlights of the area is the Bunya Mountains National Park which is about 60 km from Kingaroy.

This pleasant and isolated area of the Great Dividing Range has bushwalks, camping facilities and excellent picnic sites. With an average elevation of 975 m and a diversity of flora including rainforests, woodlands and grasslands it is an area rich in history and typical of the development of much of the region.

The Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service, who administer the area, record the park's interesting history in numerous brochures and leaflets.

For the thrill of a life time, why not see the beautiful South Burnett from above. For more information contact the Kingaroy Soaring Club.
